Objectives of the Hand Signaller (HS) Course

On successful completion of the course the delegate will be able to demonstrate their understanding and ability to carry out Hand Signalling Duties correctly, in line with Network Rail Rule Book GO/RT 8000 Series and Network Rail Group Standard GO/RT 3263 Auxiliary Operating Duties.

Content of the Hand Signaller (HS) Course

  • Railway signalling and signal identification
  • Hand Signalling equipment
  • Basic protection procedures
  • Duties in connection with signals or points failures, or repairs
  • Duties appointed in connection with AC or DC isolation
  • Duties, single line working
  • Duties, protection of hand trolleys and protection of engineering work in a line blockage
  • Protection of engineering work (T3)
  • Duties in connection with temporary block working

Learning Approach for the Hand Signaller (HS) Course

Tutor led classroom and practical sessions. Theory and practical assessments are included.

Features of the Hand Signaller (HS) Course

On successful completion of this event a certificate will be issued, which will be valid for 2 years. Delegates must attend a re-certification training event every 2 years to maintain their competence certification.

Special Requirements for the Hand Signaller (HS) Course

  • A valid medical certificate that complies with Railway Group Standard GO/RT 8067 including normal colour vision
  • A valid Track Safety certificate endorsed with either IWA or COSS Competence must be presented to the trainer at the start of each event
  • A Personal Rule Book must be brought to the event by each delegate
  • A high visibility vest, outdoor clothing and safety footwear is required on this event
